The Creative Direction

In our fast-paced world, stress is a pervasive problem, so Sonja Kuhl, certified sound therapist and stress coach and the woman behind Calm to Go, sets out to provide others with the help she has needed in the past. With Calm to Go, she offers sound baths for groups and personalized sound healing for individuals to find relaxation and inner balance, utilizing not only a variety of instruments but also substantiated coaching methods that train mental strength. Calm to Go is aimed at spiritually interested women who want to bring more self-care, relaxation, and sustainable balance into their stressful everyday lives

When Sonja approached me, she was feeling overwhelmed with making decisions for her brand. She couldn’t decide which fonts to use (“currently I use what feels like 10 different fonts because I can’t decide”), but also how to combine different aspects of her work in an offer that felt aligned with what she wanted to do. She decided to rename her business from “Anything Sort of Sound” to Calm to Go, reflecting her new path forward, where she discarded things that didn’t serve her well anymore. And from that renewed clarity, I designed a visual identity to match.

Calm to Go combines sound and coaching techniques to help her clients release tension, mentally strengthen themselves, achieve more balance, deepen their connection to themselves, and improve their mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

The Brand Design

To make Calm to Go stand out among the brand’s competitors, we needed to stay away from handwritten typography and floral elements. Instead, we focused on gradients and organic shapes. Almost every aspect of the design is in some way inspired by the movement of sound waves.

At first glance, the bespoke illustration is an abstract depiction of a singing bowl. A closer look reveals that the components of the bowl form the letters 'C' and 'G'. Rays of light grow out of the bowl, symbolizing the flow of sound. I used parts of the illustration to create additional decorative elements.

I customized the logotype to add flowing curves and gentle movement and combined it with grounding clear lines, resulting in a unique and versatile logo that takes inspiration from sound waves, without being too literal. The typesetting also increased legibility.

The color palette consists of rich, grounded shades of green combined with fresh, light tones that add an airy lightness to the design. The typography is friendly, stylish, and feminine without appearing unprofessional, aloof, or childish.

Overall, we created a design that reflects grounded naturalness and the relaxing flow of sounds.

The Brand in Use

Calm to Go is a new chapter for Sonja, but I wanted to make sure that this won’t be her last. The visual identity is made to grow with her in the future, whether she wants to add courses, workbooks, or even products to her offerings.

Currently, one focus for her is social media, so I made sure to show Sonja, how she can utilize the design to create a cohesive look on Instagram.

"Before working with Sara, I felt like I had ten different fonts and everything looked cobbled together. Plus, it was time-consuming, because I could never decide on a design. Now designing assets has become easier for me. I've become even clearer on what I stand for, and what I want to say and convey. Throughout the entire process, I felt understood and seen. Sara showed a lot of consideration for me, Calm to Go, and my mission and that is now also reflected in the brand design. My visual appearance on the website, social media, and also in print products now looks consistent, straightforward, and professional."
